Conjunctivitis, also known as Pink Eye, is an inflammation of the conjunctiva. The conjunctiva is the thin clear tissue that lies over the white part of the eye and lines the inside of the eyelid
The red colour appears when the small blood vessels begin to become inflamed.
Typically conjunctivitis is caused by bacteria or a virus and is highly contagious. However other irritants such as shampoos, environmental factors, eye drops or even some parasites have been known be a source.
Viruses, including the ones associated with colds and flu, can get into the eye and create a watery discharge
Bacteria getting into the eye can leave a thick discharge. This is usually through poor hygiene, rubbing the eyes, dirty makeup applicators or contact lens not being properly cleaned.
Environmental irritants such as pollens, produce symptoms much like those of viral conjunctivitis, depending of the severity of the seasonal hay fever. Symptoms will come and go.
