A cataract is when there is a clouding of the lens of the eye, making it difficult to carry out day to day activities.  People who experience cataracts liken it to looking out of a fogged up window.

Whilst it is more common in older people, there have been cases in the younger generations.

Causes

There are many causes of cataract formation, however, ageing is the most common. As we age, proteins in the body begin to change and likewise this affects the lens in the eye.

Causes may also be from environmental factors, genetics, previous eye injuries or surgery and even nutritional factors.  Diabetes, is also a cause, particularly amongst the cases in the younger generations.

Symptoms

There are many symptoms that could present themselves.  These can include:

  • Clouded vision
  • Vision becomes distorted at night
  • Yellowing of colours
  • Experiencing double vision in one eye
  • Sensitivity to bright light
  • Frequently needing to change your prescription lens

 

Cataracts Diagnosis

As with all noticeable changes in vision, it is important to book an eye examination to detect whether a cataract or other eye disease is apparent. 

As there are different forms of cataract, it may be a simple change in your prescription glasses however we will always refer you to an Ophthalmologist for further diagnosis.

Risk Factors

Factors that may increase the risk of age-related cataracts forming, including;

  • Diabetes
  • Family history of cataracts
  • Use of steroid medication
  • Lifestyle factors including obesity, excessive alcohol consumption, smoking
  • Previous eye illnesses or surgery
    •

Should our Optometrist discover any signs of cataracts we will refer to you an Ophthalmologist for diagnosis and treatment.  Your ophthalmologist will decide which treatment option is best suited to you.
