Glaucoma is a disease of the optic nerve. Often this disease has been caused by high pressure inside the eye and can lead, if undetected to irreversible vision loss.
In Australia, we are experiencing a rapid number of cases, with an ageing population, to around 400,000 by 2025.
It is not certain what causes Glaucoma – it can be many variables such as family history, age or other medical conditions but generally fluid within our eyes is continuously produced and must flow out. If this is prevented, the pressure will increase, potentially leading to Glaucoma.
Glaucoma is often missed by patients as it is hard to detect increase eye pressure unless it becomes an acute case or if vision starts to disappear.
Regular eye examinations throughout our life is the only way to detect glaucoma. Your optometrist will carry out all relevant tests and advise you the best way manage the irreversible disease. This may be through medication or surgery.
